A Trip to Purcellville
Located at the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge
Mountains but within convenient reach of the Washington DC, our town offers
a combination of scenic beauty and unique cultural offerings.
Purcellville has been a destination for visitors since
1874 when the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad first began service that
brought farm products east to Washington.
W&OD
People seeking refuge from the hectic pace of the city
found that the railroad was a convenient way to escape to the pastoral
surroundings of western Loudoun. Today, the W&OD rail bed has been
converted to a wonderful multi-use recreation trail that runs 45 miles from Arlington,
Virginia west to Purcellville.
Historic Downtown
Purcellville is the largest town and the center of
commerce in western Loudoun County. In our historic downtown, you’ll find
antique and gift shops, restaurants and one of the oldest hardware stores in
the country. Both the restored train station that serves as a community
center and the Bush Tabernacle that was originally built for temperance and
evangelical meetings are perfect venues for community events such as art
shows, concerts, and community dances.
Our Characteristics
Although Purcellville is growing quickly, we strive to
maintain the small town characteristics that have defined our community. Our
historic downtown has at its center a restored train station and is the site
of the local Farmers Market. Nearby are unique agricultural businesses
including farms that feature pick-your-own fruits, vegetables, herbs,
flowers, and other local farm products.
Also, approximately 30 wineries are in the Purcellville
and Northern Virginia wine region. Charming turn-of-the-century homes that
line our Main Street are a fine example of the pride that our residents feel
about their hometown. Firemen’s Field, the first lighted baseball field in Loudoun
County, has been hosting night games since 1949. Firemen’s Field has been
the site of the site of the Babe Ruth World Series through 2005.
